Ashland-Northwestern Rivalry Resumes |
For 41 consecutive seasons, the Ashland Oredockers and the Northwestern Tigers opened the football season with a non-conference game. It was one of the longest-running season-opening rivalries in the State of Wisconsin. But that ended after the 2018 opener.

In 2019, The Heart of the North Conference went to a 10-team conference with the addition of St. Croix Falls and Cameron. That meant that the Tigers 9-game schedule was a full slate of conference games, and they could no longer fit the Oredockers into their schedule. That lasted only a year. The WIAA then realigned football conferences into, for the most part, 8-team conferences, which meant most schools would have 7 conference games and 2 non-conference games. Therefore, Ashland and Northwestern were once again scheduled to open the 2020 season against each other. But COVID-19 changed that, as the 2020 football season was delayed, and both schools played only 7 games, all conference games. But, after a 3-year hiatus, Ashland and Northwestern will resume their rivalry on Friday, August 20th, at Oredocker Stadium's Weikal Field. Game time is 7 p.m. The game will be live-streamed on the Northland Sports Network. The link to watch is http://webca.st/197196.
